Writing and publishing scientific texts in English
The end product of most research projects is a written account of the methodology used, the results obtained and the relations to past, present and future research. While this may sound simple the reality is that many research projects never appear in peer reviewed journals, resulting in a loss of valuable time and money. Often the reason is that the researchers have not been able to make their written account interesting, attractive, clear and to the point. Menntun offers a course in how to write scientific text and make it satisfactory to editors and reviewers of international journals. The course is aimed at postgraduates and researchers alike and consists of 20 lectures and 20 hours of practical training. The lectures cover the following: General style of scientific papers, advice on appropriate contents of all major sections (Title, abstract, introduction, material and methods, results, discussion, literature cited, acknowledgements, figures and tables) and common flaws in scientific writing (quotes and plagiarism, verb tense, irrelevant information, use of superlatives, subjectivity, oversimplification, superficiality, statistical inaccuracies etc.). During the practical training students will read a number of unacceptable manuscripts and published research papers to spot flaws in the format and contents of the texts.
