Crash courses in identification of free-living marine nematode worms
Marine free-living nematodes are microscopic animals found in virtually all marine habitats and are usually the most abundant and species rich metazoan group in sedimentary habitats worldwide. Nematodes are not only ecologically important as key players of remineralization of detritus, decomposition and nutrient regeneration in the benthos, but have also been used quite extensively in environmental impact studies. Moreover, they are ideal organisms for use in manipulative laboratory experiments, since they can be successfully kept in small containers at high diversity and abundance during long periods. The main aim of these crash courses is to provide a base for students to identify marine nematodes confidently to the species level.
