Private crash courses in identification of harpacticoid copepods
Harpacticoids are microscopic crustaceans found in virtually all aquatic habitats and are usually the most abundant and species rich metazoan group in phytal habitats worldwide. They are also extremely abundant in marine sediments and the most important prey item of benthic feeding juvenile fish species including commercially valuable species such as flatfish and salmonids. Due to their relatively high value as food for juvenile fish they have been introduced to aquaculture; mass produced as food for fry in hatcheries. Their applied role is not limited to the trophic relations as they have been identified as the group of animals that responds to environmental perturbation more than any other. The main aim of these crash courses is to provide a base for students to identify harpacticoids to lower taxonomic levels.
